Why do we have pedestrian lanes in Manila? Do people like to see stripes on the road? Is it the DOTC’s way to break the monotony of long grey asphalt streets? Do our streets sport road markings so that they would look like all the other city streets abroad?
What are they for?!?
Pedestrian lanes in Manila are certainly NOT meant to remind people where they can cross the street. People sure as hell cross whenever and wherever they want to. Heck, I have even seen people run across EDSA or the South/North Superhighway.
Pedestrian lanes in Manila are certainly NOT meant to remind drivers that they should LET people cross the street. They just harurot their way towards those white stripes on the street even if there are obviously people trying or, even, already crossing the street. I usually insist my right to use these pedestrian lanes and more often than not, I get glares from drivers as if I was in the wrong.
So… seriously, can anyone tell me why oh why do we have pedestrian lanes in Manila?

They were left there for those who understand; and for them in turn to serve as role models for the ignorant.
At least we know that somebody in the gov’t has enough sense to put these on the streets. He is one who believeth in order.
[…] Melissa wonder why we have Pedestrian lanes in Manila […]
hay naku, eto ang true explanation why we have pedestrian lanes. we need these abstract designs on the road to remind westerners that we are civilized and we belong to their ranks.
otherwise, parehas lang yan nong mga ornamental stop and go lights in the middle of the street.
everytime I drive in manila, when i stop on the red light, minumura ako nang mga taxi drivers dahil rumatsada lang daw ako.
RED is STOP is GO? Ang gulo di ba? But who follows the traffic lights - wala. Who follow what these pedestrian lanes are for. wala.
Therefore, I conclude that by the powers not granted in me by all the engkantadas in the world na tong mga pedestrian lanes are nothing but artwork designed to be form part of the bigger ornaments in the streets including those flickering red, green and yellow lights in da middol of da street.
